About Me
I am a London based artist who has been drawing and painting contemporary life in London for the past 40 years.
I initially studied Graphic design at Sidcup School of Art, where I was taught life-drawing by Frank Auerbach. During the 70s I worked as a Graphic Designer for numerous advertising agencies and publishers in the city and west end. During this time, I also studied life drawing and painting at Goldsmiths, Camberwell and St Martins.
I have had a number of one man shows and have contributed to many mixed exhibitions including the Bankside, the Royal Academy summer exhibition, the Jubilee collection (1977), the Business Art Gallery, the Mall Galleries, the Laing Collection, the Singer and Freidlander (the Sunday Times watercolour exhibition), The Bartley Drey Gallery, the Piers Feetham Gallery and the Royal Watercolour Gallery and the Painters in Watercolour exhibition.
During the 1980s I spent three years drawing and painting the Household Cavalry, the Blues and Royals and the Lifeguards at Knightsbridge Barracks, and exhibited at the Montpellier Studio in 1983 and 1986 a series of watercolours of the soldiers and horses at their daily activities and ceremonial duties.
From 1987 to 1990, during the early stages of the demolition and regeneration, I was the official artist in residence employed by Battersea Leisure at Battersea Power Station, London’s world-famous landmark. From that commission, I generated a comprehensive and historically valuable collection of paintings and drawings.
I have undertaken many important commissions, both cooperative and private, including the official commission from the Household Cavalry to record the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of York in 1995. My painting, “Regeneration of the city”, was officially presented by Battersea Leisure to the then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.
During the 1990s I devoted an increasing amount of time to working in oils and exhibited many times at the Pump House Gallery in Battersea Park. I belonged to the Nine Elms Group of Artists and exhibited with them at the Atrium Gallery, Whitley’s, Carlton House Terrace, Painters’ Hall in the City of London and other venues.
From 2000 to about 2010 my work became more figurative with an emphasis on the urban landscape. I try to show how people live in close proximity yet somehow separate from one another. My series of paintings featuring the Underground stations and trains during rush hour, and another of London Parks are examples of this. The bustle of urban life is particularly evident in my paintings made in India. During this time, I regularly showed at Wills Art Warehouse, the Affordable Art Show and the Cagliardi Gallery.
Battersea Power station has always been a passion of mine. Since about 2012 The Battersea Power Station Development Company have given me continued, behind the scenes access to the site, the likes of which no other artist has had the opportunity to do.
